Privacy Policy

Your data stays yours and so we respect your privacy

Introduction

This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect information when you visit our website hosted at https://chronode.app or use the Chronode application ("App").

We are committed to protecting your privacy. Chronode is designed with privacy as a fundamental principle - the App stores all data locally on your Mac and transmits no personal information to our servers.

This Privacy Policy is governed by the laws of England and Wales.

Information We Collect

Chronode Application

The Chronode App collects NO personal data whatsoever.

  • All time tracking data is stored locally on your Mac using Core Data
  • Project information, session data, and analytics remain entirely on your device
  • We cannot access your activities, project names, or time tracking information

Minimal data may be transmitted to our servers for the following usage:

Crash Reports (Automatic)

The Chronode App automatically collects crash reports when critical errors occur to improve app stability. These reports include:

  • App version and macOS version information
  • Error messages and technical diagnostics
  • Stack traces showing where errors occurred
  • Crash timestamp and context

All file paths are automatically sanitized to remove your username before transmission. No personal information, project names, or file contents are included. Crash reports are sent automatically in the background and cannot be disabled. This data helps us identify and fix issues affecting all users.

Anonymous Usage Analytics (Optional)

You can optionally help us improve Chronode by enabling anonymous usage analytics. When enabled, we collect:

  • Feature usage events (e.g., when you export data or change settings)
  • App lifecycle events (launch, quit)
  • Technical information (app version, event timestamps)
  • Anonymous session identifiers (generated fresh each time you launch the app)

We do NOT collect: Your project names, file paths, code, or any personally identifiable information. Analytics are disabled by default. You can enable or disable them at any time via the app settings. When disabled, no usage data is collected or sent.

Licence Verification (Pro Users)

When you activate a Chronode Pro licence, we collect:

  • Your licence key and email address
  • Your Mac's hardware identifier (UUID from logic board)
  • App version number

To enforce our 3-device activation limit, Chronode uses your Mac's hardware UUID. This identifier:

  • Is unique to your physical Mac's logic board
  • Persists across app reinstallations and macOS updates
  • Is not shared with third parties
  • Is not used for cross-app tracking
  • Can only be reset by deactivating your licence on that device

Licence verification occurs every time you launch the app and when checking for updates. These checks require an internet connection. If verification fails, you'll receive a notification and the app will revert to free mode.

Website (https://chronode.app)

  • Usage Data: Pages viewed, time spent on site, click patterns (via analytics services)
  • Contact Information: Name and email address if you contact us voluntarily

How We Use Information

Chronode Application

  • We use crash report data to identify and fix bugs affecting app stability.

Third-Party Services

Chronode Application

Chronode uses the Sparkle framework for automatic software updates (when enabled). When checking for updates:

  • Chronode periodically checks our server for new versions
  • If you have an active Pro licence, a silent licence verification check runs during the update check

Automatic updates are opt-in and can be enabled in Settings. You can always check for updates manually via the menu bar regardless of this setting. We never sell or share your data with third parties. All collected data is used solely to improve Chronode.

Common Questions

We've got you covered. Quick answers to help you get started.

What is Chronode?

Chronode is a macOS menu bar application that automatically tracks time spent in your applications and projects (where supported). It monitors which apps you use and for how long, building an accurate picture of your computer usage without any manual input.

What are the system requirements?

Chronode requires macOS 14.6+ (Sonoma) or later and supports both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. The app uses less than 50MB of disk space and runs at an average of 1% CPU usage with less than 50MB of memory during normal operation. No internet connection is required.

How much does Chronode cost?

Chronode basic is free. Chronode Pro is a one-time purchase with lifetime updates included. No subscriptions, no recurring fees. This makes Chronode more cost effective than subscription based time trackers.

Where is my data stored?

All data is stored locally on your Mac using Apple's native database framework. Nothing is sent to the cloud, synced to external servers, or shared with third parties. No account is required. Your time tracking data exists only on your computer, under your complete control.

Does Chronode collect any data about me?

No. Chronode has zero telemetry, no analytics, and no tracking of any kind. Your usage data never leaves your Mac. There are no background network connections, no automated crash reporting services, and no usage statistics sent to developers. What happens on your Mac stays on your Mac.

Which applications can Chronode track?

Chronode can monitor any macOS application you choose. Intelligent project detection is available for the supported applications displayed when adding an app. We intend to add additional project/file detection support for commonly used apps in the near future.

Does Chronode work automatically?

Yes. Once you've added apps to monitor, Chronode tracks time automatically from the moment you launch an application until you quit it. There are no timers to remember to start, no buttons to click when switching tasks, and no logs to fill out at the end of the day.

Simply use your computer as you normally would, and Chronode quietly records everything in the background. The app handles all the tracking mechanics so you can focus entirely on your work without interruptions.

What reporting does Chronode provide?

Out of the box, Chronode provides comprehensive visual analytics to help you understand your time usage patterns. See which days you're most productive, identify your peak working hours, and visualize how time is distributed across different projects and applications.

Track your work consistency over time with intuitive graphs and visualizations that update in real-time as you work. Whether you're analyzing session lengths, spotting weekly trends, or reviewing your activity patterns, Chronode gives you the insights you need to optimize your workflow without complex settings.
